Rafael Ramírez BSc, MES, PhD
Fellow in Strategic Management, Saïd Business School.
In addition to being a Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford Rafael is Professor of Management at HEC (Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales), France's leading business school.
Rafael holds a PhD in Social Systems Science from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation was on the Aesthetics of Organization, and his thesis directors were C. W. Churchman and M. Crozier. He also holds a Master's degree in Environmental Studies (MES) from York University in Toronto. He has worked as a staff analyst at the Management and Behavioral Science Center of the Wharton School, as 'Chercheur associé' at the Centre de Sociologie des Organisations, CNRS, in Paris, and as consultant and researcher with R. Normann and his SMG colleagues in Stockholm.
Rafael is the author of numerous scientific articles published in journals such as Futures, Organization, Human Relations, and the Strategic Management Journal. His fifth book is co-authored with G Franck, Les Meilleurs Pratiques des Multinationales. In 2003 he also published Agents of Change: Crossing the Post-Industrial Divide (OUP 2003), written with C. Heckscher, M. Maccoby, and P. Eric Tixier. Rafael’s other books include Prime Movers, co-authored with J. Wallin, and translated into Finnish, Swedish, and French; Designing Interactive Strategy, co-authored with R. Normann and translated into Italian, Swedish, French, and Japanese, and The Beauty of Social Organization. The lead article on the end of the value chain co-written with Normann for the Harvard Business Review in 1993 was singled out by the Review's readers as one of HBR's ten most requested strategy reprints.
As a consultant and/or management educator, Rafael has worked in over 20 countries, with 30 corporations, six governmental organizations, one trade union federation, and two associations of industrialists.
