Oxford
Marc is a Senior Research Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford and an Associate Researcher at MIT. He designs and teaches on executive education programs at Oxford and has worked with a broad range of international organizations. Prior to coming to Oxford, he worked at an independent research institute (Institute for Employment Studies) and the London School of Economics. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in Modern History and completed his MSc in Industrial Relations at the LSE.
Marc's principal research interest focuses on the employment relationship in the context of innovation, change and effectiveness. He is exploring these themes at industry, organization and individual-level. At industry-level, he is studying the diffusion of high performance work practices and the results of a 6-year study in the Aerospace industry, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), were launched by the Minister at the Houses of Parliament. At an organizational level he is interested in what explains variations in HR Systems in science and technology industries and the implications for their effectiveness. More recently, his research has focused on inter-organizational cooperation and how firms develop and manage the competencies to enable this increasingly important mode of production. At the individual-level, he has explored the changing nature of the psychological contract of scientists and engineers and the consequences for knowledge sharing and innovative behavior. This work has been funded, amongst others, by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
He is currently Co-Directing the Strategic Renewal Research Programme (SRRP), a 3-year collaborative project with senior practitioners from Shell and the European Patent Office which is exploring the links between innovation and strategic renewal in large science and technology firms. He is also studying the role of HR in change and transformation strategies in Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs).
Marc has published widely in the area of human resource management and employee relations with over 40 papers, articles and book chapters. His work has been featured in The Economist, Les Echos, The Observer, the Financial Times and the BBC. He directs the Personnel Directors' Forum (PDF), which holds seminars and workshops for over 50 HR Directors from FTSE 500 firms, and is a Co-Director of the Oxford Institute for Employee Relations.
